Get Wise – Part 2
The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. Matthew 25:5
Let’s look a bit more into the story that Jesus told about the wise and foolish virgins. In verse 5 it says this, ‘The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.’ So we’re all on the same page, the bridegroom in this story represents Jesus. Your average wedding service tends to involve us waiting anxiously for the bride to walk down the aisle, yet here, the brides (used to represent Christians) are waiting for the groom. Jesus, the person they’ve been waiting for, whom they depend on, is coming soon (Romans 13:11), yet they’re fast asleep.
What do you think Jesus is getting at here? In 1 Thessalonians 5:6–8 it says, ‘..let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.. putting on faith and love’. Are we preparing ourselves, actively seeking God on earth, or chasing after what will ultimately not count for much? (The answer’s probably found in the way you spend your time). ‘At midnight a cry was heard: Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ (Matthew 25:6). Midnight? There’s no time that God is excluded from. Seeking after God needs to be something we let our whole lives be part of – there’s never a ‘time-out’.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You that You took no “time-out” in coming for me, in redeeming me. Help me trust that. Help me always to be ready for You – no matter what time of the day and no matter what it is You have me to do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
“The bridegroom was a long time in coming”. Hahah-yep, sounds about right.
