Pray As You Can, Not As You Can’t
You hem me in — behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. Psalm 139:5
When it comes to prayer, God isn’t moved by the quality or the quantity of your words. He’s moved by a heart that spills the burdens of the day across the altar, exposing every worry to His power. Your confidence in prayer is not based on your ‘can’ – your ability to speak, for instance, but on God’s ‘can’ – His ability to hear and understand. He knows what you are trying to say. The old hymn goes: ‘In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief. And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, by thy return, sweet hour of prayer.’ If you want that sort of comfort and control over yourself, give your ‘distress and grief’ up to God. Because whatever you give to God, He handles. Whatever you keep, you burn yourself out trying to handle. Prayer gives you back the strength, the energy to cope, and the right focus that everyday life takes away. When you pray, you’re saying, ‘Lord, I believe You’re more competent to deal with this than I am, and I trust You to do it.’ God is ready to intervene on your behalf, if you’re ready to let Him. ‘Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass’ (Psalm 37:5).
