Our Debts Are Paid

“When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” But he said to her, “There are no more.” Then the oil stopped flowing. She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest.” 2 Kings 4:6-7

A widow came to Elisha, panicked and frightened, because her husband had died and now a creditor threatened to take her children as slaves. Can you imagine what this woman was going through? She just lost her husband, and now is about to lose her children too. Elisha tells her to take the only thing in her home, which was a jar of oil, and ask her neighbors for bowls. She does so. The one jar of oil filled several bowls. The widow was able to sell the oil, pay off her debt, and still have more for her children and her to live off of.

The widow must have had a lot of trust in God. She relied on Him to help her through this tragic situation. Not only did God help her through it with the help of Elisha and her neighbors, but He also continued providing for her and her family. Are there moments in your life when it seems that there is no hope? Was God able to help you through that time? It may not have been with oil that He helped repair a messy situation, but perhaps it was with a talent of yours, or of a neighbor. The widow had a debt to pay, and so did we. Romans 4:25 says, “He was handed over to die because of our sins. And He was raised to life to make us right with God.” Jesus paid the price of our debts with His blood on the cross and His resurrection on the third day. Like the widow trusted in God to pay her debts, we too can trust in God because He paid our debts. Jesus has made us righteous in the eyes of God. Though we still will experience hardships, we have the comfort of knowing that we are free from sin, death and the devil because Jesus has paid our debts.

Gracious Father, thank You for paying our debts. Please help us to trust in You just as Elisha, and the widow did. Amen
