He Is the Rock

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:46-49

Think back to the nights when we were curled up in our blankets, sleepy, but not too tired for bed yet, and we begged someone to read us a bedtime story. Does this passage remind you of one story in particular? For me, it reminds me of The Three Little Pigs. The story goes something like this: A big bad wolf came after three pigs who were also brothers. The first brother built his house out of straw. But when the big bad wolf came, he huffed, and puffed, and he blew the pig’s house down. So the pig went running to the second brother’s house, which was made out of sticks. Again, the big bad wolf huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the pig’s house down. Both the pigs ran to the third brother’s house, which was made of bricks. This time because of the strong, well built house, the wolf was not able to blow it down. So the moral here, is probably not: if your house gets blown down by a wolf, you better be a fast runner. The moral of this story seems to point to the third brother’s wisdom in building a strong house that can stand against danger.

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “He is the rock. His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong. Upright, and just is He.” He is our father, our creator, and the eagle who spreads His wings to catch us when we fall. Who better than God to place our foundation on? God is with us, and He defends us against our enemies. It is important to read scripture, learn God’s word, and live out a life of obedience to God. That is how we develop a strong faith life. We need to have a strong faith life and build our house out of bricks, rather than sticks and straw because we are constantly running into our not so good friend, the Big Bad Wolf. But thankfully we have Christ to run to, and His rock to seek refuge under.

Wonderful Creator, You are our rock, refuge, and strength. Help us to put Your words into practice, and live life obedient to You. Thank You for Your protection against all danger. Amen
