It’s Only Words

Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3

Words. We use them every day when communicating with the world around us. Spoken words, written words, implied words. Scripture tells us that God simply “spoke the Word” and all the worlds came into order. (Genesis 1:3, John 1:1). Words have power!

James tells us that the words we speak as believers have the power to encourage and build up others, as well as the power to tear down and destroy. (James 3). All of us have been hurt by careless words. We ourselves have knowingly or unknowingly hurt others by misusing this 4” muscle called the tongue. Matthew 15:18 tells us that the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart. So how can you keep corrupt talk, harmful words, and gossip far from your lips? By examining your heart. (Psalm 51:10)

Then commit to:
1) Speak favorably of others. (Ephesians 5:18-19)
2) Replace arrogance and pride with humility and grace. (1 Sam 2:3)
3) Daily fill your heart with God’s Word. (Proverbs 4:4-5)
4) Guard your heart and tongue. (Proverbs 4:23, Psalm 119:11-16)

Apply these healthy heart rules and the outcome will be words filled with grace, mercy, compassion and life.

Prayer
Lord, I surrender my heart and my tongue to You. Death and life are in the power of the tongue and I desire to be a person who speaks life into others. Let my words be few and let Your Word be bountiful. Speak life through me, In Jesus’ Name, Amen
