White Noise

“A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” Luke 9:35

Noise. It is all around us. Traffic, airplanes, cell phones, streaming shows, downloaded music, blaring TV’s, a barrage of computer sounds to alert and allure; why even idle chatter fills the space between our ears and desensitizes us. Is it any wonder why we find it difficult to concentrate and focus, let alone hear the still small voice of our Lord?(Psalm 46:10) There is no doubt; all of us to one degree or another have become preoccupied with the distracting sounds of life.

How does one find peace in a troublesome world? How do we silence the chatter in order to hear what really matters? By turning on the white noise. By allowing the Spirit of God to drown out all the distractions so that we can be occupied with Christ alone. We need to let Christ be our white noise.

What is white noise? It is a steady, unobtrusive sound, used to mask or obliterate unwanted sounds. White noise is a sound that contains every frequency within the range of human hearing, generally from 20 hertz to 20 kHz in equal amounts with the intensity at all frequencies. We cannot obliterate the unwanted noise in life unless we consciously choose to override those demanding sounds with something (Someone) greater.

E. Schuyler English, a biblical scholar and author said, “The secret of peace within and without is to be always and only occupied with Christ.” The mind is the devil’s playground and unless you allow Christ to take up residence and occupy your every thought, you will find yourself engrossed in a world of sound with no open space for the voice of God to penetrate. It is critical we learn to tune everything else out from time-to-time and tune in completely to the Lord’s voice. If you are not occupied by Christ, you will become preoccupied with the trappings of this world.

“Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if only you would hear His voice” (Psalm 95:7)

Prayer
Father I desire to hear Your voice above all else. Calm my spirit and cause me to come away for a while, stilling the chatter that keeps me from hearing You. Father speak; Your servant is listening. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
