Always Be Prepared

David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it.” So David made extensive preparations before his death. 1 Chronicles 22:5

If you were a Boy or Girl Scout, you know the motto: Always be Prepared! Driving long distances? Have a tire repair kit in your trunk. Walking the dog? Take your cellphone in case you need to contact emergency services. Making dinner? Better have your basics on hand. Heading to a concert? Check your pockets and purse for your ticket first.

David was a man after God’s own heart, and yet because of his sin God prevented him from building a temple for the Lord. God told David that this task would be given to David’s son Solomon. But that didn’t stop David from making preparations on behalf of his son. David was concerned that Solomon was young and inexperienced, so he assembled as many materials and workers as he could in advance of his death.

While raising our children, it is our job as parents to use our experience and resources to prepare our children for the next chapter of their lives … perhaps needing to prepare them for our transition into eternity. There is no better legacy a parent can leave than to give their children the Gospel. That would be the most comprehensive preparation a parent could bestow.

Father, please remind me today to share the Gospel with my children and grandchildren. Thank You for Your indescribable gift! Amen
