Colossians 1:15-20 NLT
My daughter Hanah teaches first grade. And as parents we were filled with honor and joy when she was recognized as the “Early Childhood Teacher of the Year”!
After receiving her award in front of the entire school chapel, Hanah received a note from one of her first graders. It read:
“Dear Ms. Singer. I love how you are the best teacher in school but it’s not about you it’s about us.”
We all enjoyed a great laugh. But it made me think about how often in our lives we don’t really know – WHO IS THIS ABOUT?
We often believe that everything in life is about us! Yet the reality is that life is all about Jesus. All our accomplishments, all our talents, and even every breath is all about Jesus.
Consider the following as you meditate on this truth today:
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see — such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” (Colossians 1:15-20 NLT)
Not only are the good things you have done about Jesus…the good news is that your failures now also belong to Him through His love for you on the cross. And, He encourages us to love others with that love He first gave to us!
So perhaps that first grader wasn’t completely wrong…the reward for a teacher is really about the kids and sharing Jesus’ love with them. If you ask Hanah she would definitely tell you it is about her calling to love those kids…that’s why she shows up each day.
Jesus says the same to you. Because when it comes to His love…
It is about you!
Prayer
Lord Jesus, we thank You for your great love. We recognize that everything is about You. In You and through You we have life. We thank You for all that You have created. We recognize and we worship You as the supreme head over all things. And we thank You for the fact that You have given to us such an incredible gift of forgiveness and salvation and a life that goes on forever. Thank You, Jesus, for all these things, and thank You for making Your life about us. May we now have our lives lived in a way that makes it all about You. Amen.
