Passive Piety – March 7, 2025

Happy Friday, everyone! As we spring forward this weekend, let’s be reminded of a very important rule in how God calls us to live. The rule? Don’t bury your talents in passive piety. Christians seem to often avoid success, almost to a fault. We don’t talk about what we did or what we accomplished because it could mean we’re getting ‘puffed up’.

We can refuse to look at numbers and say, “Oh, it’s not about the numbers, it’s about Jesus”. And certainly there is an inherent danger of an inflated ego. After all, Ephesians 2 reminds us that our Salvation isn’t by works, lest any man should boast. And again, Romans 12 teaches us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought.

But don’t allow this truth to justify passive piety when it comes to acknowledging this additional truth: that God calls you to active discipleship. In fact, right after Ephesians 2:9, where we are instructed to self-check pride, we are told these powerful words, “For you are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” That is active discipleship.

What skill or talent has God granted to you that is needed to be unfrozen out of passive piety, and move forward in active discipleship? Would you pray this with me?

Prayer
Lord, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. All my talents, skills and abilities have been handcrafted by You. These, You have given to me for active discipleship in this world as we follow You, serve You, and love You.

Knowing that all good things come from You, move me into active discipleship that I may proclaim Your amazing grace and transformational love to those who You place before me this weekend. Amen.
