“For the Lord is God, and He created the heavens and earth and put everything in place.”(Isaiah 45:18)
I remember growing up with a little adage that stated “God doesn’t make junk.” It was used often to counter a poor self-image that was either self-imposed or other-imposed.
But His truth is resonated in the psalmist’s realization that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” The first article of the Apostle’s Creed states, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.” The phrase “God doesn’t make junk” is praise and worship of God’s handiwork in me and in the others He has placed in my life.
Often, it is self-doubt and a harsh critique of others that flow from our lips. Yet, we pause to consider this truth from God’s Word through the prophet Isaiah, “What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’ How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father, ‘Why was I born?’ Or if it said to its mother, ‘Why did you make me this way?’” (Isaiah 45:9-10) “For the Lord is God, and He created the heavens and earth and put everything in place.” (Isaiah 45:18)
Prayer
God, our heavenly Father, we thank You for being our Maker and Creator. And it is true, Your works are so wonderful and we absolutely worship and praise You for not only the beauty we see throughout Your creation, but also when we look in the mirror. For You don’t create junk. And You have created each and every one of us fearfully and wonderfully. That also extends as we look at others.
And so, may we celebrate and give You praise for being Maker of heaven and earth.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
