Happy Friday, everyone! In the Gospel of John, Jesus communicates that he’s speaking, but people are just not listening. Moms, does that sound familiar? I was in the grocery store earlier and I literally heard a mom say, “What part of cut it out did you not understand? You’re not listening.” The real funny part of it was that she was also there with her husband, and honestly, I wasn’t sure who she was talking to…the kids? Or was it her husband?
Reminds me of another funny joke. Did you hear that Amazon is finally doing something about the many complaints they received about Alexa listening in on people’s conversations? Their solution was genius. They launched a male version of Alexa named Alex, which never listens to anything anyone says. Well, especially this weekend as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we know one thing for sure.
Moms, thank you for not giving up, even when it seems as if no one is listening. Your patience, persistence and love are gifts from God. But today I want to point us to another voice, one that deserves our full attention. The voice of Jesus, our good Shepherd. He says in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.”
How can you hear His voice or spend time in His word? Pause to pray. Listen in the quiet and reflect on His promises. Even when we tune Him out, even when we’re distracted or disobedient, Jesus never gives up on His children. He’s always speaking love, truth, and grace, calling us back, leading us forward and offering peace in the chaos.
Because when Jesus speaks, He’s longing to communicate to you, “You’re mine. I know you. I love you. Follow me.” Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, and may we all become better listeners.
Prayer
Jesus, open our ears that we might tune in and hear Your voice. And as you’re calling to us, reassure us of the love that You have for us, and Your faithfulness again.
And as we place our faith and our confidence and our trust in You, would You help us to do the same for others, that we might open our ears and truly listen to the things that people are saying? Especially to our moms, Lord, we give You great thanksgiving for the gift of motherhood and the blessing that it can be to so many.
Continue to bless all moms. And in those places where they’re feeling like they’re not heard, or maybe feeling like their voice doesn’t matter, remind them of the power, the strength, and the importance of the role that You have granted to them as they follow You. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
