Let earth receive her King!
Happy Friday, everyone!
From Zechariah 9:9, we read, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you, righteous and having salvation. He is humble and mounted on a donkey.”
You know I want you to take heart this Christmas, because don’t mistake that baby in the manger for being some kind of just nice but really ineffective kind of solution to the world’s problems.
In fact, that is a King, and that is a rightful King over all creation. Jesus is not a hopeful option. He literally is the rightful King of the earth. And when we sing that phrase, that’s what we’re saying: Earth, receive your King.
And here’s what that means for us this Christmas. It means that history is not drifting. It’s still being governed. It means that our lives are not random. They’re claimed and being directed. It means peace is not some kind of wishful thinking. Peace is a person. He’s a King.
So, Christmas is more than celebration. It’s assurance. The King has come, the King still reigns, and nothing—not fear, not chaos, not the darkness—none of that gets the final word.
The King does. “Let Earth receive her King.”
Prayer
Rightful King of heaven and earth, we receive You again this Christmas. Rule where we worry; reign where we resist; bring peace where we are weary. And remind us that You have come, that You are present, and that You are still on Your throne. Let our lives bear witness that You are the King and let our invitation be to those to receive You, and let us welcome You into our celebration this Christmas. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
