There’s a difference between showing up and being glad to be there, and we are called to worship eagerly.
Psalm 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” That’s eagerness, that’s joy. That is worship from the heart. Not just habit. But in our world, that kind of eagerness seems rare.
Recent reports suggest that only 20% of Americans attend worship weekly. Many say they attend, but research shows some attend more for habit or optics than genuine worship.
Surveys reveal people routinely overreport their worship attendance. They say they’re present when their hearts and habits, well, they tell a different story. It’s a reminder that presence doesn’t always equal participation, and attendance doesn’t always equal adoration.
We’ve grown so used to convenience that we’ve forgotten the joy of gathering. For some, worship has become one more checkbox between errands. For others, it’s a police routine. Respectable but reluctant.
But God calls us to something different. He calls us to come gladly, to come grateful, to come because we get to, not because we have to.
Eagerness begins when we remember Who is waiting there for us. We don’t gather for programs, pastors, or preferences. We gather to meet with Jesus. He’s in the midst of His people welcoming, forgiving, strengthening. He speaks through His Word and He serves through His table.
Hebrews 10:25 urges us “not to neglect meeting together, but to encourage one another,” to lift one another’s faith just by showing up with joy.
And every Sunday is a family reunion of grace.
So when the next invitation comes, let’s go to the house of the Lord.
Don’t sigh. Smile.
Don’t drag your feet. Lift your heart.
And don’t come out of guilt. Come out of gladness.
Because every time we gather, heaven bends down. And in His house, we discover the joy that no schedule, screen, or storm can steal.
Prayer
Lord, renew my gladness in worship. Let me come to Your house with joy. With gratitude, make my heart eager to meet You. And to encourage those beside me. Thank you that in Your presence there is fullness of joy. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
