Worth – Part 5
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26
The crowds begin to file away. Funds are drying up and these last few teaching conferences haven’t paid too well. The disciples think about passing the bucket around or leaving direct debit forms on their seats, but Jesus doesn’t seem interested. He never thinks about where the next check is coming from. Some of the disciples wonder about packing it all in and getting a real job. And then a sparrow swoops across the path snatching a moth from the air with his mouth. Jesus is on it right away: ‘Did anyone else see that?’ He begins. ‘The faith of that tiny creature. He doesn’t chill next week’s meals in a freezer. He has faith that the seeds and nuts will be on the trees and the insects will still be in the air tomorrow. If that small bird can have faith in nature – how much more can we have faith in God?’
Sparrows have one last message for us in this series about your worth, and it’s this. They’re not that great at saving. Bank of America doesn’t offer many sparrow-based mortgages. It seems the wee-winged ones aren’t much for planning ahead, and yet God is pleased to sort out their dinners. If God values these guys, His value for you, your worth, is so much greater. Worried about money? About your shelter and security for the future? God loves you even more than those sparrows.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me trust You in my life circumstances, knowing that You are a God who provides for my ‘daily’ needs. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
