Bring a Basket

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Many of us have heard Philippians 4:19 quoted by friends, delivered in sermons and taught in bible studies, encouraging us and reminding us of God’s provisions. God cares for His people. In Matthew 6:25-34 we are encouraged not to worry. We are given reassurance that the Lord knows our needs and is tuned into each of us on a personal level. “Your Heavenly Father knows what you need.”(vs.32)

Have you ever felt like maybe God was out of need-meeting power and you got passed over? You struggle with financial hardship, relational break downs, declining health and a host of other human maladies that visit us all in this lifetime. One of Satan’s strategies is to bring you to a place of discouragement, doubt and fear. Remember in Mark 8 when Jesus feeds the four thousand? Scripture tells us that “Jesus called his disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for these people.” (vs.2). The Lord’s compassion and provision fed the people that day, resulting in baskets of bread remaining even after people had eaten to their full. When the Lord supplies, He does so generously and completely.

D.L. Moody seemed to capture our doubt concerning God’s provisions when he said, “If you pray for bread and bring no basket to carry it, you prove the doubting spirit, which may be the only hindrance to the gift you ask.”

We serve a God of abundance, faithfulness and reliability. Our God is able (and willing) to reach into our corner of the world and show Himself to be all that He said He is; Lord of All! 2 Corinthians 9:8 reminds us that, “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” Are you seeking the Lord and asking Him to meet a need in your life? In faith, trust that He will provide what you need for the moment; and don’t forget to bring your basket!

Prayer
Father God, it is easy to go to that place of doubt and despair. This world can overwhelm us and waiting on You is not our strong suit. Nonetheless, we wait in faith knowing that You are sovereign over all. Thank You Lord for supplying all my needs in Christ Jesus, in whose name I pray, Amen.
