Active Anticipation – December 1, 2025

2025-12-01-PCS

The Christmas countdown is on again. Another year of making lists and checking them twice. Christmas cards, gatherings, meal plans. Worship plans, travel plans. All in anticipation of a celebration. It’s a celebration countdown.

This is Advent, a season where we are called to prepare. Be ready. Be ready for an incredible celebration just ahead and ready for Jesus to return.

And Advent begins with anticipation. The people of Israel waited generations for the Messiah. In biblical times, anticipation wasn’t passive. It was active. Active waiting. Their waiting wasn’t empty. They lit lamps. They prepared sacrifices. They told stories to the next generation.

Active anticipation shaped their rhythms and living and preparation.

And today, even though we are now on the other side of that chronological timeline, as we get ready to remember that first coming of the Messiah in the gift of the baby Jesus, we’re called to live our lives still in active anticipation for His return.

It’s more than waiting. It’s watching. It’s preparing. It’s holding space in our hearts for what’s coming next.

And what’s coming next? It’s Jesus. Jesus Himself. Jesus said in Luke 12: “Be dressed ready for service, and keep your lamps burning like servants waiting for their master to return, so that when he comes and knocks, they can immediately open the door for him.”

That’s active anticipation. Not waiting with arms crossed, but waiting with sleeves rolled up.

Behind every good deed in this season is not just preparation for Christmas, but a deeper readiness for Christ.

Active anticipation is serving with joy. Giving with hope. Lighting lamps in a dark world. Holding space for Jesus to move in.

So keep watch. Keep giving. Keep showing up. Jesus is coming.

And behind every good deed that points to Him is a heart that’s waiting. A heart that’s waiting well … with active anticipation.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, awaken my heart this Advent, not just to the celebration of Christmas, but to the anticipation of Your return. Let my preparation be more than just lists and lights. Let it be about service, sacrifice, and trust. Help me to live with active anticipation. Not just in Advent, but each and every day until You return with my lamp lit and my life aligned behind every good deed. May the world see You. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
