The Divine Witness Protection Program – April 27, 2026

Since its formal start in 1971, the Federal Witness Security Program, often called the Witness Protection Program, has relocated and provided new identities for more than 19,000 witnesses and their family members whose lives were turned upside down because they spoke truth.

In other words, someone saw something others couldn’t ignore, spoke up, and accepted that their life could never go back to normal.

That’s the kind of courage being discussed here.

In law enforcement terms, a protected witness is someone whose testimony places them in grave risk. They are given a new identity, a new life, but they still have to testify. Their value lies not in who they were, but in what they saw and were willing to reveal.

In much the same way, when Jesus says to His first followers, “You are witnesses,” He isn’t commissioning the bulletproof — those so tough that nothing would ever touch them. He’s sending ordinary men and women whose courage would come not from strength but from the Holy Spirit.

The disciples had good reason to be afraid. Locked doors, whispers of arrests, a city still echoing with the sound of a crucifixion. Talk about a world that felt unsafe.

When Jesus meets them, He doesn’t find men ready to take on the world for Him — but men trembling in fear of those who had just crucified Him.

Yet Jesus doesn’t join them in that fear. Instead, He sends them straight into it. He says simply, “You are witnesses.”

But He doesn’t send them without protection. He sends them with a promise: “The power of My Father is coming.” (Luke 24:48-49)

And that witness protection program of the Father is the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8 explains: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you, and you will be My witnesses to the end of the earth.”

The Holy Spirit doesn’t simply cover our fears — He uses them.
He doesn’t remove all danger — He strengthens the witness.

We often think power means safe. But in the Kingdom of God, power means sent.

Sent into neighborhoods, offices, schools, and families that may not be ready to believe.

The Spirit’s power isn’t about keeping us hidden. It’s about giving us holy boldness to speak.

That boldness comes from the presence of the One who called and empowers them.

Nearly every disciple who heard Jesus say, “You will be my witness,” was martyred for that very testimony. Yet their deaths were not a failure of God’s protection. They were the fulfillment of His promise.

The Spirit did not shield them from danger — He sustained them through it.
He didn’t preserve their safety — He preserved their faith.
He didn’t preserve their life here on this earth — He welcomed them safely home.

And their witness was not in vain.
That same spirit lives in you.

That same power that turned fearful fishermen into fearless witnesses now fills your heart and life with courage and conviction.

You may never enter a courtroom or a witness stand, but you have been called to testify, to speak of what you’ve seen and heard in Christ.

When you forgive someone who hurt you, you’re testifying.
When you pray for a neighbor, you’re testifying.
When you share how God met you in your weakness, you’re testifying.

Don’t wait until you feel bulletproof. The Spirit who sent the first witnesses into the world still empowers you today — right where you are and wherever He will lead you and send you.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to be Your witness. Fill me with Your Spirit’s power. Give me courage to speak of what I’ve seen and heard in You. When fear arises, remind me of Your presence. Use my life and words to draw others into Your freedom. In your name I pray. Amen.
