Memorial Day For Freedom – May 25, 2026

2026-05-25-PCS

Today, we remember those who have fallen in defense of freedom. Men and women who believed liberty was worth their life. Who stepped into battle so that others could live in peace.

As a country, the United States has always stood as a beacon of freedom. We’re not a perfect nation. Far from it. But freedom is woven into our DNA. It’s the heartbeat of our story.

And it’s for that love of freedom that so many have paid the ultimate price, to defend it, to extend it, to ensure that others could live beneath its blessing.

In my travels outside this country, I’m constantly reminded how precious that freedom truly is. And today, I’m especially mindful of the cost — the lives laid down so that we might stand here in the open air of liberty.

We live in a nation richly blessed by God, and it is right to give thanks for those who have given all. But it is also fitting, meet, right, and salutary that, in this time and in this place, we lift our eyes from the battlefields of earth to the hill of Calvary. For it is there that the truest freedom was won.

At Calvary, Jesus gave up His life so that sinners might be redeemed and recreated for eternity. It was there that He fought a different kind of war, not against flesh and blood, but against sin, death, and the devil.

And in that battle, freedom was not just defended, it was delivered.

Sin is like a prison door — a heavy iron gate that can only be unlocked from the outside. Those trapped inside are guilty and condemned. They cannot free themselves.

Only One who is not guilty. The Judge Himself has the power to open that door.

And that’s what Jesus did.

He entered our prison, took our sentence, and with nail pierced hands turned the key. The stone rolled away. The cell swung open. Freedom was declared for all who believe.

And this work is what Jesus reminded His disciples was said about Him in Luke 24.

“The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations.” (Luke 24:46-47)

In those words, Jesus not only revealed what He had done, He revealed what we are to do.

The freedom He purchased at the cross is a freedom He now sends us to proclaim. We are called to bring that message, that salvation, that liberty, that forgiveness to all nations.

That calling aligns beautifully with this day. Just as soldiers fought to extend freedom’s reach across the world. Christ calls His church to carry His message of spiritual freedom to every heart still captive to sin.

Our mission mirrors His mercy. The cross commissions us to go. You can walk out of that prison of sin today because Jesus Christ opened the door.

As you step out into that freedom, He places his arm around you and says, “Now let’s go free others.”

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is never free. Someone paid the price. Today, we give thanks not only for those who died to make us free, but for the One who died to free us eternally.

Prayer
Lord of freedom in faithfulness, we thank You for those who have given their lives to defend liberty in our land. And we thank You even more for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave His life to deliver us from sin’s prison. Let us walk in that freedom not as slaves to fear, but as witnesses of Your grace. Make us bold to proclaim repentance and forgiveness in Your name, that the world may know the liberty of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
