“Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” (John 15:5b)
In The Jungle Book, King Louis didn’t want friendship with Mowgli. He wanted fire.
He wanted the power without obedience.
Authority without calling.
And that temptation didn’t die with a cartoon.
We want peace without prayer.
We want clarity without waiting.
Results without abiding.
We say things like, “I’ve got this.”
“I’ll pray later.”
“I know what to do.”
That’s not necessarily outright rebellion. It’s something quieter.
It’s called functional independence.
But fire without obedience burns everything down. Letting God be God means trusting that what only Christ can give cannot be produced by effort.
The source of joy is not working to live a life that has lived for Christ, unless it is first lived in Christ.
That distinction is one that can be easily missed, leading us to measure results while ignoring relationship.
Prayer
Oh, Jesus, we confess how quickly we try to handle life ourselves. Slow us down before we burn ourselves out. Teach us to stay close. To listen before acting. To trust before fixing. We don’t need more fire. We need You. Forgive us and graft us into You — the Vine. Amen.
