“Let the favor of the LORD our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us.” (Psalms 90:17)

Today is Labor Day. And for many, that means a long weekend. A cookout. One more breath before summer gives way to fall.

Labor Day was originally established — and continues to honor — the contribution of workers. To recognize those people whose daily labor helps provide for and strengthen the life of our nation.

And that is worth celebrating.

Because if you think about it, much of what we need comes through the work of someone else. The food we eat, the care we receive when we are sick, the people who teach our children, the neighbor who shows up when something needs to be fixed.

Martin Luther wrote, “For creatures are only the hands, channels, and means whereby God gives all things.”

God is the giver, giving through people, through ordinary hands, and through ordinary work — through people who get up, show up, and serve their neighbor.

When we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” God often answers through the faithful labor of others — and perhaps through us.

That doesn’t mean that our work earns God’s love, but because we are His, the workplace before us becomes more than a job, a task, or just another long day. It becomes a place to love and serve our neighbor.

It’s a place where God can use us to bless someone else.

So today, give thanks for the hands God has used to provide for you, and ask Him to establish the work of your hands — not so that you’ll be noticed, but so that someone else may receive a glimpse of His goodness through you.

Prayer
Lord God, thank You for the people whose work blesses my life every day. Forgive me when I complain about what You’ve placed before me or measure my worth by what I produce. Instead, remind me that I am already loved, forgiven through Jesus Christ, and established the work of my hands. Use my time, my words, and my calling to serve the people around me. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
