“Each family had just what it needed.” (Exodus 16:18)
God led His people into the wilderness, and He could have told them everything. He could have given them a map, a timetable, a detailed plan for the next 40 years — because God certainly knew it.
But He chose not to.
Instead, He gave them manna. Enough food for the day.
Exodus tells us that some gathered much, and some gathered little. (v.17) But when it was measured, every family had enough.
Not everything they might need for the next month.
Not a warehouse full of security.
But enough for today.
That’s how God often works.
Of course, we want answers for next week and for next month, and maybe even next year. We want to know what will happen with this diagnosis we’ve been given. We want to know what happens with the job and the career in the future, about the relationship, about the decision that is needing to direct us now and into the long term.
But God often gives us something different than that.
He gives us daily bread.
Enough strength for today.
Enough grace for today.
Enough mercy for just today.
Some Israelites tried to keep extra manna for the morning. They wanted to make sure that tomorrow was covered too.
But they found out that that wasn’t going to work because what they saved ended up being spoiled.
Because God was teaching them something deeper than food.
Trust is not something that can simply be stored up, bottled up, and then used. Rather, faith and trust are used and received and strengthened daily.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11)
Not next year’s bread, not next month’s bread, but today’s. And God may not show you the entire road ahead, but He will give you what you need for the next step.
In fact, He’ll give you enough for today.
Prayer
Lord, I confess how often I want tomorrow’s answer before I learn to trust You in the today. Forgive me for trying to carry what You have not asked me to carry, and grant to me my daily bread. Give me daily faith. Give me enough grace for the step in front of me. And teach me to trust that You will meet me again tomorrow. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
