How Do I Get Into The Bible? – Part 1

Sanctify them by the truth; Your Word is truth. John 17:17

At the back of your head maybe you’re thinking that you could be doing more to get yourself – mind, emotions, all that – into Bible reading. But how do you start? One proven and helpful way to get better at Bible reading is an old practice where you simply slow down. Over 5 – 10 minutes, read a chosen verse or two of the Bible, slowly. Listen for a word or section that touches your heart. In silence, repeat it over to yourself (repeating brings your whole attention to it.) Pray your distracting thoughts and concerns up to God, and let Him speak to you through what you’ve read.

An example of how this changes minds: in 1950s South America, some people too poor to own Bibles got together in groups to read Scripture like this. They read that God was a God who ‘raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap’ (Psalm 113:7), they quickly realized that He was for them, and they could no longer live within oppression. We live in a country where the Bible is easily available. Are we going to use it to let it transform our lives like they did?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me meditate on Your Word and allow You to speak to me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
